Strenght of the programme
The Institute of Archaeological Sciences at ELTE University is one of the few European academic centres that provide a wide-ranging archaeological education and research covering the millennia from the Palaeolithic to the Early Modern Ottoman period, with a focus not only on Europe, but also on the Near East and Central Asia (regeszet.elte.hu). The Institute conducts excavations at the important settlements of Bibracte (France) and Grd-i Tle (Iraqi Kurdistan), as well as on the Neolithic site at Polgár and the Roman town of Brigetio in Hungary. The Institute coordinates the HistoGenes ERC Synergy Grant bioarchaeological project (2020–2026) and hosts the 28th Annual Meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists in 2022. The Institute’s foreign-language book series and English-language journal offers an insight into its diverse academic activities (Dissertationes Pannonicae, Dissertationes Archaeologicae (dissarch.elte.hu/index.php/dissarch). Most of the program’s lecturers have international teaching experience and they regularly give lectures on international conferences. The Institute’s researchers are involved in several international scientific collaborations. Several professors of the Institute are members of international scientific committees or honorary members of scientific organizations (e.g. DAI, ÖAW, Académie française). The archaeological training offered by Eötvös Loránd University is regularly among the best in international rankings.
