Programme structure
PhD students taking part in the 4-year full-time programme of the Doctoral School are required to obtain a total of 240 credit points. Of these credits, a minimum of 82 are required to be research-related, 66 publication-related and 16 teaching-related points.
Furthermore, a total of 76 credit points must be obtained through course work. There are 4 categories of courses within the Doctoral School:
• Compulsory Courses ©, from which 24 credits must be obtained
• Compulsory Elective Courses (CE), from which 8 credits must be obtained
• Specialized (S) courses – freely chosen from any specialization, from which 10 credits must be obtained
• High-level specialized (HLS) courses – based on a choice from a compulsory list of courses, from which 20 + 14 credits (specialized courses + 3 seminar courses) must be obtained.
Over the duration of the doctoral programme, students are expected to become increasingly self-reliant in their work.
In order to assess the academic and research achievements of prospective PhD degree holders, students are expected to pass a comprehensive exam at the end of the 4th semester of the doctoral programme. This exam concludes the research phase of the doctoral programme and marks the beginning of the “research and dissertation” phase. To take the comprehensive exam, students must have already passed the language exams (in number, type and level) required for the attainment of a PhD degree.
After the 8th semester the students are required to prepare a dissertation. The defence has two different parts:
• Preparation of draft doctoral dissertation and its presentation at an internal defence
• Submission of finalized doctoral dissertation and its public defence
