PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

120 ECTS

Operated jointly with Semmelweis University Budapest, this study program allows students to gain advanced theoretical and practical knowledge at the cutting edge of medicine and informatics.

Medical biotechnologists work in the bio-medicinal field where their responsibilities include research, development, application, and management. They are able to model and simulate biological systems on computers, apply the methods and instruments of computational biology and biochemistry, and design, create, manage, and use databases in the field of medical biotechnology. They will be able to model different biological systems on a computer and handle large-scale data sets for such systems.
As specialists trained in science, informatics, and specific fields of medicine, they can be employed in basic research, or in the field of pharmaceutics, medical/molecular diagnostics, or biotechnology.

FOCUS AREAS

Bionanotechnology
Biopharmacy – pharmacokinetics
Recombinant DNA techniques
Bioinformatics

SPECIALIZATION

The following specializations are built into the curriculum of the study programme:
● Molecular Biotechnology
● Applied Bioinformatics

Programme structure

Research and innovation for health

The program unfolds over a duration of 1+4 semesters (1 foundation semester + 4 semesters), providing a comprehensive and structured educational experience.

FOUNDATION SEMESTER

International students must attend a Foundation Semester in the fall semester, before starting the actual Master’s program. Thus, the actual commencement of the Master’s program is February.
The goal of the foundation semester is to level students for their Master’s program in Budapest, helping to ensure that they can complete their studies successfully.
The foundation semester helps students to recap, develop, and upgrade the Bachelor-level skills needed to succeed in their Master’s program.

Students may only start the four-semester Master’s program upon successful completion of the Foundation Semester.

CURRICULUM

The curriculum of the Medical Biotechnology MSc study program (120 credits) includes the following modules:

- Fundamentals in Natural Sciences and Mathematics (requirements for diploma: 15-25 credits)
- Economics and Humanities (requirements for diploma: 5-15 credits)
- Skills in Medical Biotechnology (requirements for diploma: 15-35 credits)
- Specialization (requirements for diploma: 30-50 credits)
- Project Work and Thesis Work (requirements for diploma: 29 credits)
- Other elective subjects (maximum 6 credits)

SPECIALIZATIONS

The specializations developed in the program prepare our students for the following areas of research and development and innovation activities:

Molecular Biotechnology
For those most interested in experimental aspects of medical biotechnology, working in a “wet lab” with molecules, cells, tissues, and/or animals. The specialization offers courses in stem cell and tumor biology, laboratory diagnostics and drug delivery systems, and more, focusing both on the biological background and the techniques that can be applied.

Applied Bioinformatics
For students wishing to get in-depth knowledge in computational biology, most importantly in molecular data analysis, data mining, and structural bioinformatics, with emphasis on data handling, analysis, and interpretation. Optional courses in systems biology and Java programming are also available.
