Overview
he Program comprises two phases, the first of which consisting of three modules: core curriculum courses in the fields of literary theory, cultural studies and literary history stretching over the first three semesters; teaching, tutoring, mentoring and other department-related activities (second and third semesters); individual research for the thesis (continuous) and revision for the final exam (fourth semester). Having earned the required credits and passed the final exam, students enter the second phase, wherein they are required to finish their theses with the help of their supervisors, and submit it in two years after their final exam. The program is thus divided into two years of coursework and two years of research and writing, with tutors helping candidates all along on their way towards receiving their PhDs. As the faculty have different areas of expertise, we support individual research with a variety of focus in the fields of British, Irish and American literatures in English. Teaching, Tutoring and Mentoring, & Other Department-Related Activities (10 credits)
Students in the first phase of their studies are required to take courses offered by the Department of English Literatures and Cultures in the field of literary theory, literary history, and cultural studies. The courses are typically related to different subfields of literatures written in English, and will focus on some of the most pressing issues. Courses and their topics include, but are not restricted to, the rise and development of the novel; genres in literatures written in English; adaptation, imitations and re-writing of literature in different historical and media contexts; new trends in English and American critical thinking, cultural studies and literary theory; approaches to narrative and memory. Upon completing the third semester, a final reading list catering to the student’s research interest is to be compiled by the joint effort of student and faculty. The readings include material covered in courses offered by the department (60%) and relating to the student’s research (40%). The complex exam is due at the end of the fourth semester, and is conditional on (1) the student’s having earned all the required credits for course work and research, (2) having provided a written account of research done in the first four semester, (3) as well as a summary of academic activities (translations, publications, conference participations) in the four semesters while a PhD student in the program.
