Overview

Program description:
The Computer Science Engineering program at the Bachelor level is developed to provide solid knowledge and understanding about the foundations, methodologies, applications, and practice of computer sciences and today’s information technology. The course is designed by taking into account two perspectives: to provide the necessary theoretical background for the students by providing those foundations and experiences at the same time, which prepare them for problem solving and future challenges, and focusing on the industry-related practice of the field to provide up-to- date knowledge about the most widely used technologies, which can be used immediately on the market after graduation.

Four major specialities are offered for the students: IOT, embedded systems and robotics specialization, Big Data and business intelligence specialization, Cloud service technologies and IT security specialization (with two subspecializations) and Software design and development specialization (with three subspecializations).

These specializations cover the most important and rapidly improving fields of computer science. Each specialization contains at least six courses focusing on the core knowledge of the field of interest completed with laboratories. During the theoretical and laboratory courses the most up-to-date devices and equipments are applied in order to prepare our students for the challenges of the industry.

The aim of the course can be summarized in the following way: qualify computer science engineers who are competent to install, develop and maintain technical IT and information infrastructure systems and services, and to participate in the design and development tasks of the data and program systems of those, as well as possess the necessary high-level knowledge to pursue the program at master level.

Programme structure

a) Succesful final exam
The successful final exam includes the following conditions:
- the prerequisite requirements are fullfiled;
- the student successfully defends the diploma work;
- the student gets at least satisfactory grade from the state exam subjects.

The prerequisite requirements are the followings:
- final certificate,
- thesis approved by a reviewer,
- fulfilment of specified 210 credits,
- fulfilment of specified internship,
- fulfilment of institute language criterion examinations.

Admission to the final examination is subject to the obtainment of a final certificate. The final certificate is issued to students having fulfilled all educational requirements specified in the curriculum– except for language certification – the specified internship and obtained the necessary amount of credits.

b) Fulfilling foreign language requirements.
The student needs to hold an official language certificate at the moment of he/she receives his/her diploma
The structure of the course consists of three parts:
- general studies related to computer science and connected areas (natural sciences, economics and human sciences, professional core curriculum);
- and specific studies related to a given specialization of computer science (specialization, optional subjects);
- independent work (thesis work, internship).

Students should obtain the following credits from given fields of expertise during their studies:
Natural sciences 42 credits,
Economics and human sciences 18 credits,
Professional core curriculum 77 credits,
Specialization 48 credits,
Optional subjects 10 credits,
Thesis 15 credits.
Total number of credits: 210 credits.

Internship is a project-structured practice of at least 8 weeks (containing 320 work hours) fulfilled alone or in teamwork at a suitable organization or at the University’s training place.
The internship can be done in Hungary or in other countries as well.

Teaching at the university is conducted in three different forms: lectures, seminars, and laboratory practice. Attendance at seminars and labs is strictly regulated by university rules; absence over 30% of classes entail a ban from examinations. There are two ways of assessment. A practical mark is awarded at the end of predominantly practical courses, and are solely based on a student’s term-time progress. An examination is required at theoretical courses, which can be taken in the exam period. The final grade of an examination might include term-time progress A student’s performance is evaluated on a 1-to-5 grading scale, with 1 being equivalent to “fail” and 5 to “excellent”.

Evaluation methods beyond the scope of the university regulations described above are at the lecturer’s discretion. The list is long, but the most common ones are
● mid-term and end-of-term written tests,
● project works,
● reports,
● mini-lectures,
● homeworks,
● oral presentations, etc.,
or any combination of them. There are no fixed percentage categories for different grades, but most commonly 50% is required for a pass. Normally, one retake is offered for a missed assignment. Term-time requirements with course syllabi, as well as dates and deadlines are listed in a document by the lecturer, and made public on the faculty website before the start of the semester.

The evaluation of progress is checked in the following ways:
a) during the semester with written or oral presentation, written test, or assessing home assignment
(plan, measurement minutes etc.), with practical mark or signature,
b) passing a pre-examination during the semester,
c) passing an exam or a comprehensive exam in the exam period and
d) with final examination.

Career opportunities

Computer Science Engineers are welcome in the sectors of informatics. Job opportunities are usually offered by informatics related vendors and international firms, institutions of the financial market, software development and software engineering companies, research institutions, NGOs and others. On the field interesting and challenging tasks can be found to which contribution can be made by the knowledge of a Computer Science Engineer for example developments regarding data processing and transfer, trading system automation, industrial design and operations, big data related tasks, machine learning, computer vision, automotive technologies, security, web development and site building, network development, etc.

Job examples and opportunities

A wide range of job opportunities are available in Hungary and among the world. The most typical job offers are coming from the following main themes:
Software Developer
Database Administrator
Computer Hardware Engineer
