Overview

Short description
The MA course offered by the Institute of Philosophy at the Faculty of Humanities is a two-year, full-time program comprising four semesters. Students need to have some philosophical background – a minimum of 30 credits as part of their BA studies. Students will have the opportunity to draw up their study and research programme under the supervision of a supervisor of their studies (in most cases different to their thesis supervisor). The aim of this setup is to give flexibility, and at the same time guidance so that students gain a thorough coverage and a sound grounding in the major fields of philosophy. At the same time students are required to engage in research either in some areas of history of philosophy, or in some field of systematic philosophy. These studies lead up to the MA thesis project.

This program is recommended to applicants who would like to deepen their knowledge in philosophy and intend to pursue an academic career or intend to work as experts of the humanities, with an emphasis on philosophy, at such places of employment as publishing houses, cultural centres, international companies, civil service or non-governmental organizations.

The course enables students to carry out a research program in philosophy and prepares them for doctoral studies.

The teachers of the programme have significant international experience. They have studied and/or worked in research projects abroad. The different departments of the Institute of Philosophy have academic co-operations and exchange programmes with various European universities and research centres. It has Erasmus+ partnership with the University of Pittsburgh, Tel Aviv, and with several major European Universities

Specializations
Instead of tracks of specialisations the programme in philosophy is organised in a flexible way so that students can plan their studies under the guidance of their supervisor of studies. Students are required to choose a focal point in their study and research, earning 48 credits either in History of philosophy or in Systematic philosophy.

Strength of program
Philosophy is one of the three major fields in Arts and Humanities – alongside Archaeology and Linguistics – where Eötvös Loránd University is ranked in the QS lists (150-200). A major special feature of studies in philosophy at Eötvös Loránd University is its balance between the history of philosophy and the systematic aspects of the discipline. This way our students are not only well versed in the details of the development of the Western tradition, but also learn to appreciate the connections between the discussions and issues of the discipline at present, and the historical motivations of these discussions giving them an insight into how these issues were articulated and tackled through the ages.
